If you have done
all that Disneyland and the attractions have to offer try Newport
Beach!
Located just 6
km from the John Wayne airport Newport Beach has a lot to offer,
boating , fishing, snorkeling,
surfing, parasailing, golfing,
bicycling, hiking and of course shopping. Across the harbour is
Balboa Island known for its cute shops great restaurants and people
watching. It's easily reached by a five minute ferry ride from the
Newport boardwalk. You can hop on a harbour cruiser and
for $10 snatch a seagulls eye view of some of the mansions that put
Newport
Beach on the map.
Dining in Newport
Beach is a great experience; some of the best include Amelia’s
on Balboa Island a mix of seafood and Italian cuisine. The First
Cabin Restaurant
at the Balboa Bay Club is topnotch with great service and decadent
deserts. Locals favour the Cannery, Billy’s at the Beach
Or the Crab Cooker, where you eat off paper plates and if you arrive
late, you’ll have to stand in line.
For
nightlife locals like Woody’s Wharf, Villa Nova and La
Cave which features live jazz. After dining you can hop a gondola
complete
with a crooning gondolier, all this romance for just $125.
The price for this Adventures at Sea includes Godiva chocolates
and
champagne.
There are
plenty of seaside
places to stay including
the Balboa Bay Club Resort & Spa
opened to the public last May, formerly a private club since
1948. There is also the Four Seasons in Newport mainland
or the Best Western Newport Beach Inn and the modest Little
Inn by the Bay 2 blocks from the beach.
In addition to
the beaches there is the Fun Zone on
the peninsula or boardwalk; play some arcade games, lots of souvenirs
and a Ferris wheel! For a really great
meal here try the Newport Landing for excellent oysters and seafood.
For shopping check
out the massive Fashion Island open air mall some 200 stores to tempt
you! There is also a wonderful Thai restaurant called
Thaifoon.
Another interesting
place to take the kids is it Upper Newport Bay Ecological
Reserve & Nature
Preserve on University Dr. This back-bay estuary, fed by the Santa
Ana River and its tributaries, serves as a winter retreat
for migratory birds. You can hike bike or even boat the waters. The information
centre offers lots of activities and info call 949-923-2269
